The verse teaches a vision of the divine as immanent in the entire cosmos: earth, directions, heaven, gods, and celestial bodies are all limbs of one sacred reality. Ethically, it urges humility and dharmic restraint—actions in war and governance should be measured against a larger cosmic and moral order.
Bhīṣma is praising and identifying the Lord’s cosmic embodiment, describing the universe as the Lord’s body—Earth as feet, directions as arms, heaven as head, and the Sun and Moon as eyes—thereby framing the battlefield events within a theologically charged, all-encompassing vision.
