Adhyāya 108 — Nimitta-darśana and Drona’s counsel amid Arjuna’s advance (निमित्तदर्शनं द्रोणोपदेशश्च)
sa bhavān sarvasainyena parivārya pitāmaham | samare karma kurvāṇaṃ duṣkaraṃ parirakṣatu ||
The verse highlights a wartime ethic of responsibility: when a senior leader undertakes perilous, decisive action, the collective must provide protection and support. It also reflects reverence toward elders and the strategic necessity of safeguarding the commander who carries the main burden of battle.
Sañjaya reports instructions/intent that Bhīṣma, the Kauravas’ grandsire and chief warrior, should be encircled by the full force of the army and carefully protected while he fights and performs formidable deeds on the battlefield.
