Yudhiṣṭhira’s Rājasūya Resolve and the Slaying of Jarāsandha
सहदेवं दक्षिणस्यामादिशत् सह सृञ्जयै: । दिशि प्रतीच्यां नकुलमुदीच्यां सव्यसाचिनम् । प्राच्यां वृकोदरं मत्स्यै: केकयै: सह मद्रकै: ॥ १३ ॥
sahadevaṁ dakṣiṇasyām ādiśat saha sṛñjayaiḥ diśi pratīcyāṁ nakulam udīcyāṁ savyasācinam prācyāṁ vṛkodaraṁ matsyaiḥ kekayaiḥ saha madrakaiḥ
He sent Sahadeva to the south with the Sṛñjayas, Nakula to the west with the Matsyas, Arjuna to the north with the Kekayas, and Bhīma to the east with the Madrakas.
To carry out a coordinated royal mission by covering all quarters—each Pandava leading forces and allies—so the required objectives could be completed efficiently as part of the larger dharmic plan surrounding Jarāsandha and the kings.
Śukadeva Gosvāmī speaks this verse to King Parīkṣit while narrating Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes and the events leading to Jarāsandha’s fall and the organization of allied forces.
Effective service succeeds with clear delegation, appropriate leadership, and cooperation—aligning one’s abilities with a purposeful mission rather than acting in a scattered or ego-driven way.
