Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Frames the practical method for vairāgya: doṣa-darśana of viṣaya (sense objects) and guṇa-darśana of Īśvara; this is an inner tīrtha (purificatory contemplation) supporting Śiva-yoga.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It teaches a classic Shaiva path to liberation: discern the inherent defects in worldly sense-experiences and steadily contemplate Shiva’s auspicious qualities; this double contemplation naturally produces vairagya (dispassion), a key prerequisite for moksha.
Contemplating Īśvara’s guṇas is Saguna-upāsanā: worshipping Shiva with attributes (compassion, purity, lordship). Linga-darśana and Linga-dhyāna focus the mind on these divine qualities, weakening attraction to transient pleasures and strengthening orientation to Pati (Shiva).
Daily dhyāna on Shiva’s auspicious qualities along with japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) supports this teaching; pairing it with Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and rudrākṣa as reminders of impermanence and Shiva’s lordship helps stabilize detachment.
