Dakṣa’s Sacrificial Undertaking and the Devas’ Assembly without Īśvara

The sages (ṛṣis) of Naimiṣāraṇya
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
It frames a key Shaiva teaching: ritual “dharma” pursued for artha (worldly reward) without humility and devotion can become bondage (pāśa). Śiva, as Pati (the Lord), may interrupt such action to correct ego and restore true dharma aligned with liberation.
By questioning why Maheśa obstructs Dakṣa’s rite, the verse points to the Shaiva view that outer sacrifice is incomplete without honoring Śiva as the supreme Lord. Linga/Saguna-Śiva worship emphasizes surrender and right recognition of Śiva, not mere ritual performance for gain.
The implied takeaway is to purify intention: perform worship with devotion and humility—e.g., japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and offering with a non-commercial motive—rather than treating ritual as a tool for status or reward.
