The verse praises Shiva as the divine force that shatters the root of duḥkha (sorrow) and the sufferings caused by hostile forces—outer demonic powers and inner enemies like fear, anger, and delusion—granting refuge and spiritual steadiness on the path to liberation.
By describing Shiva with attributes—Sun-and-Moon eyes and the power to destroy suffering—the verse supports Saguna upāsanā. In Linga worship, devotees invoke this compassionate, protective aspect of Shiva while recognizing the Linga as the symbol of the transcendent (Nirguna) reality.
Use it as a protective namaskāra during japa of the Panchākṣarī (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), visualizing Shiva’s solar-lunar gaze removing afflictions; it can accompany Tripuṇḍra-bhasma application and a simple offering of water to the Shiva Linga.
