Inside Sukta 75

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet turns toward the Aśvins’ most beloved, powerful, wealth-bearing chariot and adorns the offering with praise, asking them to hear the sweet (mādhvī) call.

  2. Development

Their defining traits are unfolded—wakeful readiness, swift movement on the chariot-path, and attentive hearing—alongside remembered acts of restoration that prove their reliability.

  3. Climax

A paradigmatic miracle is highlighted (the setting-right of Cyavāna), concentrating the hymn’s central claim: the Aśvins renew what is diminished and make the broken whole.

  4. Where it settles

Dawn rises and Agni is kindled in right season; the Aśvins’ chariot is yoked and the hymn ends as a final, urgent invitation to arrive and heed the invocation.

The deity: Aśvinau

  • In the VedaTwin divine horsemen, youthful and radiant, “hearers of the call,” who travel in a swift chariot at dawn and are famed for wondrous interventions—healing, restoring vigor, saving from peril, and granting boons.
  • Cosmic functionThey mediate the transition from night to day, bringing renewal, health, and auspicious beginnings; they connect human need with swift divine response, especially at the liminal hour of dawn.
  • Inner significanceThe Aśvins symbolize the awakening powers that restore wholeness—clarity returning after darkness, vitality returning after decline, and the mind becoming “awake” and capable of right action.

The seer

  • Atri (Ātreya)Ātreya (Atri-gotra) · One of the great Ṛgvedic seers and a principal ancestor of the Ātreya line, celebrated for hymns of luminous insight and for Aśvin-invocations that emphasize healing, rescue, and the dawn-arrival of divine help.
