The Greatness of the Gaṅgā (Gaṅgā-māhātmya): Saudāsa/Kalmāṣapāda’s Curse and Release
पुराणश्रवणाद्भक्तिर्जायते श्रीपतौ शुभा । विष्णुभक्तनृणां भूप धर्मे बुद्धिः प्रवर्त्तते ॥ २ ॥
purāṇaśravaṇādbhaktirjāyate śrīpatau śubhā | viṣṇubhaktanṛṇāṃ bhūpa dharme buddhiḥ pravarttate || 2 ||
由聆听《普拉那》,对室利主(Śrīpati,吉祥天女拉克什米之主)之吉祥奉爱(bhakti)便生起。噢大王,凡毗湿奴的奉爱者,其心智自会积极趋向法义(dharma)。
Sanatkumara (teaching Narada; vocative 'bhūpa' indicates the instruction is framed for a king within the narrative)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It states a direct spiritual result (phala): śravaṇa (listening) of Purāṇic teaching gives rise to auspicious bhakti toward Viṣṇu, and that bhakti naturally orients one’s buddhi toward dharma.
Bhakti is presented as something that can be awakened through śravaṇa—regular, attentive hearing of Purāṇic narration—leading the heart toward Śrīpati and shaping conduct through dharma-centered understanding.
No specific Vedāṅga (like Vyākaraṇa or Jyotiṣa) is taught in this verse; the practical takeaway is sādhana: purāṇa-śravaṇa as a disciplined practice that strengthens dharma-buddhi.
