The Greatness of Viṣṇu
Viṣṇor Māhātmya
यद् गृहे नास्ति देवर्षे शालग्रामशिलार्चनम् । श्मशानसदृशं विद्यात्तद् गृहं शुभवर्जितम् ॥ ६९ ॥
yad gṛhe nāsti devarṣe śālagrāmaśilārcanam | śmaśānasadṛśaṃ vidyāttad gṛhaṃ śubhavarjitam || 69 ||
噢天界圣仙啊,凡家中不供奉礼拜沙拉格拉摩圣石(Śālagrāma-śilā)者,当知其宅如同火葬场;此家远离一切吉祥。
Sanatkumara (addressing Narada as Devarṣi)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: raudra
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
The verse elevates Śālagrāma-arcana (Viṣṇu worship in an aniconic sacred stone) as a primary marker of auspiciousness in a household, teaching that a home without such devotion becomes spiritually barren and inauspicious.
It frames bhakti as lived daily through arcana—regular, reverent worship of Viṣṇu as Śālagrāma—showing that devotion is not merely belief but sustained household practice that sanctifies one’s living space.
Ritual application (kalpa-oriented practice) is implied: maintaining nitya-pūjā/arcana in the gṛhastha setting, including rules of worship, purity, and daily observance connected to Vaiṣṇava home-rituals.
