Adhyaya 52 — The Manifestation of Nilalohita (Rudra) and the Allocation of His Names, Abodes, Consorts, and Lineages
ṣaṣṭir yāni sahasrāṇi ṛṣīṇām ūrdhva-retasām | ūrjāyāṃ tu vasiṣṭhasya saptājāyanta vai sutāḥ ||

Two ideals are juxtaposed: mass ascetic communities (ūrdhvaretas ṛṣis) and household-based lineage (Vasiṣṭha’s sons). Purāṇas thereby validate both renunciation and regulated progeny as dharmic modes.
Vaṃśa plus ancillary cosmological enumeration (a common Purāṇic technique to anchor history through numbers and named lines).
Ūrdhvaretas points to sublimation: conserving and transmuting vital force into spiritual luminosity. The 'seven sons' motif anticipates the archetype of sevenfold order (often mirrored in saptarṣi symbolism).
