Vāmadeva’s Rājadharma: Norm-Setting, Counsel, and the Prevention of Rāṣṭra-Vināśa
yas tu niḥśreyasaṁ śrutvā jñānaṁ tat pratipadyate | ātmano matam utsṛjya taṁ loko 'nuvidhīyate ||
True progress toward the highest good comes from receptivity: when one hears a beneficial, liberating teaching and adopts it—letting go of egoic insistence on one’s own opinion—one becomes genuinely wise, and such wisdom naturally earns trust and followership.
In the didactic setting of the Śānti Parva, Vāmadeva is presenting a principle of ethical and spiritual instruction: the ideal listener is not rigid but willing to abandon self-willed views and embrace niḥśreyasa-oriented knowledge; this quality makes him a guide whom people follow.
