Utathya’s Instruction: Royal Dharma, Restraint of Pride, Protection of Subjects
etat phalam asūyāyā abhimānasya vā vibho | tasmād budhyasva māndhātar mā tvāṃ jahyāt pratāpinī ||
Envy (asūyā) and pride (abhimāna) bring downfall; a ruler must remain vigilant and humble so that royal fortune (Śrī/Lakṣmī) does not depart.
Utathya addresses King Māndhātṛ with a warning: the misfortune being discussed is traced to envy and pride, and the king is urged to awaken to discernment so that his power and prosperity do not abandon him.
