Adhyāya 42 (Śānti Parva): Śrāddha, Aurdhvadaihika Rites, and Royal Welfare Measures

Vaiśampāyana uvāca: kṛtakṛtyo 'bhavad rājā prajā dharmeṇa pālayan | dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ yathāpūrvaṃ gāndhārīṃ viduraṃ tathā |

Educational Q&A

A ruler’s true success is measured by dharmic protection of the people: when governance is aligned with duty and justice, one becomes kṛtakṛtya—ethically fulfilled and less vulnerable to rightful blame.

Vaiśampāyana describes Yudhiṣṭhira settling into righteous kingship and feeling his responsibilities completed through dharmic rule, while the narrative also notes Dhṛtarāṣṭra continuing in his prior situation with Gāndhārī and Vidura.
