Educational Q&A

The verse highlights that ethical life is not only about possessing virtues like austerity, truth, and self-control; one’s conduct in relationships and the moral weight of actions (including provoking or receiving a sage’s curse) can negate expected rewards such as heaven. Dharma is holistic, and consequences follow even for the outwardly righteous.

Kṛṣṇa recounts an episode where Nārada, angered in a family context (as maternal uncle), curses his nephew Parvata, declaring that Parvata will not attain Svarga even though he is disciplined and devoted to constant dharma, endowed with tapas, brahmacarya, satya, and sense-restraint.
