Release from Desire-Bondage and the Marks of Peace
svadāra-nirato dānto hānāsūyur jitendriyaḥ | ṛṣvik-purohitācārya-mātulātithi-saṁśritaiḥ ||
The verse teaches gṛhastha-dharma centered on fidelity, sense-control, and a deliberate refusal to quarrel with those who deserve honor, care, or protection—especially family members, dependents, and social-religious guides. Such restraint is presented as a purifier that frees one from sin.
In Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma after the war, Vyāsa delivers ethical guidance. Here he outlines the conduct of an ideal householder: disciplined, non-envious, and committed to maintaining harmony by avoiding disputes with priests, teachers, guests, dependents, and one’s own household.
