The verse teaches that worldly rise and fall should not be attributed solely to personal agency; prosperity and adversity often reflect the unfolding of destiny and past karma. This discourages arrogance in success and harsh judgment in others’ misfortune, encouraging humility and ethical steadiness.
The speaker addresses Indra (Śakra/Vajrin), stating that Indra’s present prosperity and the speaker’s (or their group’s) present condition are not self-made. The statement reframes the situation as governed by forces beyond immediate personal effort—fate and karmic fruition—within the reflective, didactic tone typical of Śānti Parva.
