Virūpākṣa’s Dāna and Gautama’s Burden — the approach of Rājadharma
दत्तानुकीर्तिविंषम: क्षुद्रो नैकतिक: शठ: । असंविभागी मानी च तथा सझ्ी विकत्थन:
dattānukīrtiviṁśamaḥ kṣudro naikātikaḥ śaṭhaḥ | asaṁvibhāgī mānī ca tathā saṅgī vikatthanaḥ ||
毗湿摩说道:“大王啊,那种人被称为残忍、惯于行无情之事:他反复宣扬自己所施之赠与,心胸狭小,判断偏执而又狡诈;他不肯分与他人,傲慢自满,沉溺于感官之乐,并为求称誉而徒然夸口。”
भीष्म उवाच
Cruelty is not only physical violence; it is also revealed through character—boasting of one’s gifts, pettiness, bias, deceit, refusal to share, pride, attachment to pleasures, and self-advertising speech.
In the Shanti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhishma addresses the king and lists behavioral markers by which a person is recognized as nṛśaṁsa (ruthless/cruel), continuing a broader catalogue of unethical dispositions.
