Balarāma’s Pilgrimage Context
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे । इसके बाद धैर्यवान् असितने उन लोकोंमें रहनेवाले ब्रह्मययाजी सिद्धों और साधु पुरुषोंसे हाथ जोड़कर विनीतभावसे पूछा--“महात्माओ! मैं महातेजस्वी जैगीषव्यको अब देख नहीं रहा हूँ। आप उनका पता बतावें। मैं उनके विषयमें सुनना चाहता हूँ। इसके लिये मेरे मनमें बड़ी उत्कण्ठा है”
etad icchāmy ahaṃ śrotuṃ paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me |
毗湿摩波衍那说:“此事我愿闻之,我心好奇甚深。”于是坚忍的阿悉多合掌恭敬,向居于诸界、奉行梵祭的悉地者与圣贤问道:“大德诸君!我如今不复见那威光赫奕的阇耆湿婆耶。请告我他在何处。我渴望闻其事迹,心中满是殷切向往。”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The passage highlights the dharmic posture of inquiry: genuine desire to know should be joined with humility (vinīta-bhāva) and reverence toward the wise. Ethical learning is presented not as argument but as disciplined listening and respectful questioning.
The narrator frames a moment of heightened curiosity. Asita, not seeing the radiant sage Jaigīṣavya, respectfully approaches the Siddhas and holy men of those realms and asks them to reveal where Jaigīṣavya is and to speak about him, driven by strong longing to hear his account.
