Chapter 45
सर्वनिव महेष्वासानजय्यानमरैरपि । के च प्रपक्षौ पक्षौ वा मम सैन्यस्थ संजय
sañjaya uvāca |
ke ca prapakṣau pakṣau vā mama sainyastha dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca—
sañjaya! rādhāputraḥ karṇo devatānām api ajayyaḥ, tathā bhīmasenena parirakṣitān dhṛṣṭadyumnādīn sarvān mahā-iṣvāsān pāṇḍava-vīrān prati kathaṃ vyūhaṃ vyaracayata? sañjaya! mama sainyasya pakṣa-prapakṣa-rūpeṇa ke ke vīrā āsan?
三阇耶说道:持国王问道:“三阇耶啊,罗陀之子迦尔那,纵使诸天亦难以征服,他为应对由毗摩塞那护卫的持军等般度诸雄——皆为大弓手——是如何布置战阵(vyūha)的?又,三阇耶,在我军之中,谁充当阵形的左右两翼与辅翼(支翼)?”
संजय उवाच
The verse foregrounds the ethical tension of kingship in war: a ruler’s anxiety turns to questions of tactical arrangement and reliance on champions. It implicitly shows how attachment and fear can narrow attention to military advantage, even as the larger dharmic consequences of the conflict loom.
Dhritarashtra questions Sanjaya about Karna’s tactical response—how Karna arranged a battle formation to meet the Pandava great archers (notably Dhrishtadyumna) who are said to be protected by Bhima, and which Kaurava warriors were positioned as the wings and supporting wings of that formation.
