Chapter 45
समन्वितास्तव सुतै: कृष्णार्जुनजिघांसव: । श्रीकृष्ण और अर्जुनको मार डालनेकी इच्छावाले युद्ध-निपुण संशप्तक योद्धा युद्धसे कभी पीछे न हटनेवाले रथी वीर थे। उनकी संख्या चौंतीस हजार थी। वे आपके पुत्रोंके साथ रहकर व्यूहके वाम पार्श्वकी रक्षा करते थे
samanvitās tava sutaiḥ kṛṣṇārjunajighāṃsavaḥ | yuddha-nipuṇā saṃśaptakā yoddhā yuddhāt kadācid api apasarpitum aśaknuvan rathī-śūrā āsan | teṣāṃ saṅkhyā catuḥtriṃśat-sahasrāṇi āsīt | te tava putraiḥ saha sthitvā vyūhasya vāma-pārśvasya rakṣāṃ kurvanti sma |
三阇耶说道:与你的诸子并肩的是“誓不退却”的桑沙普塔迦战士——精于战阵,立誓绝不从战斗中转身退走,并怀着诛杀奎师那与阿周那的炽烈决心。他们皆为强大的车战勇士,人数三万四千。驻列在你诸子身旁,他们守护战阵的左翼。
संजय उवाच
The verse highlights that steadfastness and courage (not retreating, keeping vows) are ethically neutral qualities: when driven by wrongful intent—such as the resolve to kill the righteous—these same virtues become instruments of adharma. It invites reflection on aligning discipline and commitment with dharma rather than mere factional loyalty.
Sañjaya reports to Dhṛtarāṣṭra that the Saṃśaptaka contingent, allied with the Kaurava princes, is positioned to defend the left flank of the Kaurava battle array. They are described as expert chariot-warriors, numerous (34,000), and intent on slaying Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna.
