Pacification of the Nārāyaṇāstra and Drauni’s Renewed Assault
sañjaya uvāca | akampata mahārāja bhayatrastā iva cāṇḍanā | mahārāja! dhāvataḥ padātisainikānāṃ pādānāṃ dhamakena iyaṃ pṛthivī bhayabhītā abalā iva kampitum ārabdhā |
The verse conveys the moral weight of war through vivid imagery: even the earth is portrayed as trembling in fear. It implicitly critiques the overwhelming violence of massed armies and invites reflection on the human cost and ethical gravity of battle.
Sanjaya describes to the king the intensity of the battlefield: the infantry rush forward, and the pounding of their feet is so heavy that the earth itself seems to quake like a frightened, vulnerable person.
