ततः: समभवद् युद्ध घोररूपं भयानकम् | पाण्डूनां भगदत्तेन यमराष्ट्रविवर्धनम्
tataḥ samabhavad yuddhaṃ ghorarūpaṃ bhayānakam | pāṇḍūnāṃ bhagadattena yamarāṣṭravivardhanam ||
三阇耶说道:“于是般度族与婆伽达多之间爆发了一场战斗——形势惨烈,景象骇人——这场冲突扩张了阎摩之国,因为它把许多人送入死亡。就这样,因傲慢与争胜而驱动的战争暴烈,成了毁灭的机括,而不再是护持正法的屏障。”
संजय उवाच
The verse underscores the moral gravity of war: when conflict becomes “yamarāṣṭra-vivardhana” (an increaser of Death’s realm), it highlights how unchecked hostility and pride turn battle into mass destruction, pressing the listener to reflect on dharma, restraint, and the cost of violence.
Sañjaya reports that a dreadful, fearsome battle erupts between the Pāṇḍavas and King Bhagadatta, described as so lethal that it effectively increases Yama’s domain—i.e., many warriors are slain.
