Bhīṣma-nipāta-saṃvāda — Sañjaya’s Report of Bhīṣma’s Fall (भीष्मनिपातसंवादः)

yatra śāntanavaṁ bhīṣmaṁ hataṁ śaṁsasi sañjaya | putraśokābhisaṁtapto mahad duḥkham acintayam ||

Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds the ethical and psychological cost of war: even a king becomes morally and emotionally destabilized by attachment and grief for his sons, which clouds judgment and intensifies suffering.

Dhṛtarāṣṭra, hearing Sañjaya’s report, reacts with shock and sorrow and asks where and how Bhīṣma—pillar of the Kuru side and son of Śāntanu—has been brought down, while confessing his own overwhelming grief for his sons.
