Inquiry into the cause of Arjuna’s recurring hardship

Book 14, Chapter 89

koṭiḥ sahasra-niṣkāṇāṃ vyāsāya tu vasuṃdharām |

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dāna as a pillar of dharma: even supreme sovereignty and wealth are to be offered with humility, especially as dakṣiṇā, honoring spiritual authority and acknowledging that kingship is stewardship rather than possession.

After the Aśvamedha-related rites, Yudhiṣṭhira gives an immense quantity of gold coins as dakṣiṇā to the brāhmaṇas and then donates the entire earth to the sage Vyāsa, as narrated by Vaiśaṃpāyana.
