Royal Reception Protocols during Āśvamedha Preparations
vaiśampāyana uvāca— janamejaya! pāṇḍavānāṁ mahale praviśya mahābāhur babhruvāhanaḥ atyanta-madhuraiḥ vacobhiḥ svāṁ pitāmahīṁ kuntīṁ pādayoḥ praṇamya; tataḥ citrāṅgadā devī ca kouravyasya ātmajā ca ulūpī, ubhe saha vinayena pṛthāṁ kṛṣṇāṁ ca upajagmatuḥ.
The verse highlights dharma expressed as vinaya—humble conduct and reverence toward elders and revered women of the family. Sweet speech and respectful gestures (bowing at the feet) function as ethical markers that restore harmony and affirm rightful relationships after conflict.
Babhruvāhana enters the Pāṇḍavas’ palace, speaks courteously, and pays homage to his grandmother Kuntī. Then Citrāṅgadā and Ulūpī together approach and respectfully touch the feet of Kuntī and Draupadī, formally acknowledging them within the family and courtly order.
