Adhvaryu–Yati Dialogue on Svabhāva, Ahiṃsā, and Mokṣa
prokṣyamāṇaṃ paśuṃ dṛṣṭvā yajñakarmaṇy athābravīt | yatir adhvaryum āsīno hiṃseyam iti kutsayan ||
The verse frames an ethical challenge to ritual action: an ascetic labels the sacrificial handling of an animal as hiṃsā (violence), implying moral fault. It sets up a dharma-discussion on whether Vedic sacrifice can be reconciled with non-violence and how intention, scriptural sanction, and harm are weighed.
During a sacrificial procedure, an animal is being ritually sprinkled (prokṣaṇa). A yati present at the scene rebukes the Adhvaryu priest, declaring that the act constitutes violence and therefore leads to sin.
