The verse functions as part of a didactic catalogue: by naming recognized exemplars (especially ascetics), Bhīṣma supports an ethical argument that dharma is preserved and illustrated through the lives of disciplined, renowned persons.
Bhīṣma, in Anuśāsana Parva’s instruction on dharma, continues enumerating notable individuals—presented as authoritative examples—within a larger discourse addressed to Yudhiṣṭhira.
