On Those Worthy of Honor and Salutation
एवमुक्तो मतड़स्तु भृूशं॑ शोकपरायण: । अध्यतिष्ठद् गयां गत्वा सों5गुछ्ठेन शतं समा:,उनके ऐसा कहनेपर मतंग अत्यन्त शोकमग्न हो गयामें जाकर अंगूठेके बलपर सौ वर्षोतक खड़ा रहा
śakra uvāca | evam ukto mataṅgas tu bhṛśaṃ śokaparāyaṇaḥ | adhyatiṣṭhad gayāṃ gatvā so’ṅguṣṭhena śataṃ samāḥ |
闻此言,马唐伽悲恸至极,遂往伽耶,复立誓苦修,独以拇趾支身,平衡而立,历经百年。
शक्र उवाच
The verse highlights tapas as disciplined endurance: intense grief is not merely indulged but redirected into a sustained vow, suggesting that inner turmoil can be transformed into purposeful spiritual effort.
After being spoken to (by Śakra), Mataṅga becomes deeply sorrowful, goes to the sacred place Gayā, and performs a severe austerity by standing on his thumb for one hundred years.
