Pūjya-namaskārya-prakaraṇa
On Those Worthy of Honor and Salutation
त्वां तु शोचामि यो लब्ध्वा ब्राह्माण्यं न बुभूषसे । मतंगने कहा--देवराज! मैं तो यों ही दुःखसे आतुर हो रहा हूँ
tvāṃ tu śocāmi yo labdhvā brāhmaṇyaṃ na bubhūṣase |
摩檀伽曰:“我为你而悲——你既得婆罗门之位与其尊严,却不愿守持。正为你我而哀叹:你以出生便具备本应以行持拥护之物,然而你却拒绝使之成为自身之道。”
मतंग उवाच
Brahminhood is not merely a birth-label but a dharmic ideal to be consciously upheld; possessing the status yet refusing its ethical discipline is a cause for lament.
Matanga addresses the other party with reproachful compassion, saying he grieves for them because they have obtained Brahminhood yet do not wish to embrace or live according to it.
