Pratyakṣa–Āgama–Ācāra: Doubt, Proof, and the Practice of Dharma (प्रत्यक्ष–आगम–आचारविचारः)
(भूत्वा पूर्व गृहस्थस्तु पुत्रानृण्यमवाप्य च । कलत्रकार्य संतृप्प कारणात् संत्यजेद् गृहम् ।।
bhūtvā pūrvaṁ gṛhasthas tu putrān ṛṇyam avāpya ca | kalatrakārya-saṁtṛptaḥ kāraṇāt saṁtyajed gṛham ||
avasthāpya mano dhṛtyā vyavasāya-purassaraḥ | nirdhano vā sadāro vā vanavāsāya sa vrajet ||
圣摩醯湿伐罗言:人当先为居士,生子以偿对祖灵之债,并圆满因妻室与家业而起的一切责任。其后,为成就法(dharma),当舍离家宅。以坚忍安住其心,由坚决之志所引导,便应启程入林而居——或无资具而独行,或携妻同行——进入“林栖期”(vānaprastha)之戒行,使之成为从世间职责转向灵性修持的自觉而正当的过渡。
श्रीमहेश्वर उवाच
One should follow a staged ethical life: fulfill householder obligations—especially duties to ancestors through progeny and responsibilities connected with marriage—then, with firm resolve, transition to forest-dwelling for the focused pursuit of dharma and spiritual discipline.
Śrī Maheśvara instructs on the proper progression of the āśrama system, describing when and how a person should leave household life and depart for the forest, either alone and unencumbered or together with his wife, guided by steadiness of mind and determination.
