Jaratkāru-nirukti and Parīkṣit’s forest encounter (जরত्कारुनिरुक्तिः—परिक्षिद्वनप्रसङ्गः)
śeṣa uvāca: sodaryā mama sarve hi bhrātaro mandacetasaḥ | saha tair notsahe vastum tad bhavān anumanyatām ||
The verse highlights ethical discernment in companionship: when close associates are misguided or lack good judgment, one may seek distance to preserve one’s own right conduct, but should do so with humility and by seeking rightful permission rather than acting in arrogance or impulsiveness.
Śeṣa addresses a revered authority (the Lord) and states that his uterine brothers are foolish-minded; he therefore does not wish to remain with them and requests consent to separate and live apart.
