Sudāmā Brāhmaṇa: Divine Friendship, Guru-bhakti, and the Lord’s Grace
स वै सत्कर्मणां साक्षाद् द्विजातेरिह सम्भव: । आद्योऽङ्ग यत्राश्रमिणां यथाहं ज्ञानदो गुरु: ॥ ३२ ॥
sa vai sat-karmaṇāṁ sākṣād dvijāter iha sambhavaḥ ādyo ’ṅga yatrāśramiṇāṁ yathāhaṁ jñāna-do guruḥ
朋友啊,赐予肉身出生者,是最初的师长;为人行入门礼(乌帕那耶那),使之成为“再生者”,并令其履行法义之业者,是更直接的师长。然而,能赐予一切住于诸修行阶位(āśrama)之人以超越之智者,才是究竟的上师;他实与我自身无二。
This verse explains that upanayana is the direct beginning (birth) of a twice-born brāhmaṇa into sacred duties—an entry into disciplined spiritual life and righteous conduct.
In the meeting with His brāhmaṇa friend Sudāmā, Kṛṣṇa highlights the foundation of spiritual life—discipline in varṇāśrama and honoring the guru as the giver of knowledge—thereby glorifying genuine brāhmaṇa culture and devotion.
