Kṛṣṇa Teases Rukmiṇī; Her Devotional Reply and the Lord’s Assurance
नैवालीकमहं मन्ये वचस्ते मधुसूदन । अम्बाया एव हि प्राय: कन्याया: स्याद् रति: क्वचित् ॥ ४७ ॥
naivālīkam ahaṁ manye vacas te madhusūdana ambāyā eva hi prāyaḥ kanyāyāḥ syād ratiḥ kvacit
噢,摩度苏丹啊,我并不认为你的言语虚妄。正如安芭的故事,未出嫁的少女往往也会对某个男子生起爱慕之情。
Having refuted everything Lord Kṛṣṇa said, Śrīmatī Rukmiṇī, in a gracious frame of mind, now praises the truthfulness of His statements. In other words, she accepts that Lord Kṛṣṇa used her as an example to elucidate ordinary female psychology. The King of Kāśī had three daughters — Ambā, Ambālikā and Ambikā — and Ambā was attracted to Śālva. This story is narrated in the Mahābhārata.
This verse shows Rukmiṇī’s sincere, humble love: she trusts Kṛṣṇa’s words and admits that a maiden’s affection rarely goes beyond family—implying her extraordinary devotion to Him.
In their intimate exchange, Kṛṣṇa speaks in a way that agitates and tests her feelings; Rukmiṇī replies with faith and self-effacing humility, emphasizing how unusual her love for Him is.
It teaches steadiness and trust in divine guidance: when challenged emotionally, respond with sincerity, humility, and clarity about where your deepest loyalty and love truly belong.
