FAQs

It defines upākaraṇa as the formal, saṃskāra-based commencement for taking up Śruti (Vedic) study/recitation, emphasizing that Veda-grahaṇa must be preceded by prescribed purificatory preparations.

Alongside theology and myth, the Agni Purana catalogues practical dharma procedures—here, a technical rule for Vedic pedagogy and ritual initiation—while also listing social-religious categories of renunciants/sectarian types who observe such rites.

By insisting on saṃskāra before Śruti-grahaṇa, the verse frames Vedic study as a sanctified act: purity of conduct and correct commencement are treated as necessary conditions for the merit (puṇya) and efficacy of recitation.
