Śauryavrata-vidhi (Durgā-navamī-vrata)
Ritual-Manual
Verse 1
Vào ngày Navamī, hỡi Đại vương, trước hết hãy hoàn mãn (kết thúc) sự hành trì bằng lễ dâng piṣṭa với lòng sùng kính; hãy thết đãi các Bà-la-môn với lòng thành, và cũng thờ phụng Nữ Thần—Durgā, bậc cát tường, Mahāmāyā (Đại Huyễn), Mahāprabhā (Đại Quang Minh).
Verse 4
Within the Varāha–Pṛthivī instructional dialogue, the topic turns to a practical discipline for converting fear into courage and for restoring diminished social standing; Varāha relays an authoritative sage-teaching attributed to Agastya.
Agastya teaches the śauryavrata (vow cultivating valor) to be observed annually in Āśvayuja, structured across saptamī (saṃkalpa/resolve), aṣṭamī (nirodha/restraint, fasting/regulated conduct), and śuddhā navamī (Durgā worship with offerings and brāhmaṇa-feeding).
On navamī the practitioner worships Durgā under epithets such as Mahābhāgā, Mahāmāyā, and Mahāprabhā, offers piṣṭa, feeds brāhmaṇas, and repeats the regimen for a full year; at the completion, kumārikās are honored with gifts and formally approached with kṣamāpana (ritual apology/conciliation), sealing the vow’s social and inner transformation.
The phalaśruti promises restoration of lost kingship/status, attainment of knowledge, and acquisition of valor/courage, presenting bravery as a cultivated fruit of restraint, devotion, and redistributive giving.
No explicit toponyms or ecological regions are named in these verses; the only situational marker is the calendrical setting (month of Āśvayuja and tithis saptamī–navamī).
The text frames courage and social stability as cultivable through disciplined self-restraint (upavāsa/nirodha), reciprocal giving (feeding brāhmaṇas and honoring kumārikās), and accountability through kṣamāpana (asking forgiveness), linking inner transformation to socially restorative action.
The observance is set in the month of Āśvayuja. It centers on the śuddhā navamī, with a sequence across saptamī (saṃkalpa), aṣṭamī (nirodana/restraint), and navamī (offering, feeding brāhmaṇas, Durgā-pūjā). It is repeated according to rule for one year (saṃvatsara).
Environmental stewardship is not explicit in these verses; however, within the Varāha–Pṛthivī framework the chapter can be read as indirect ‘earth-ethics’ by promoting regulated consumption (fasting/restraint) and redistributive hospitality, practices that conceptually reduce excess and reinforce communal sustainability rather than extraction.
Agastya is the named authoritative sage-speaker. The text also references social categories and roles—nṛpa (king), brāhmaṇas, and kumārikās—without specifying dynastic lineages or particular historical rulers.
