How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons: Indra is invited to come, sit on the barhis, and drink the well-pressed Soma prepared for his delight.

The rite closes by reaffirming the successful ‘bringing’ of Indra to the offering for Soma-drinking, aligning the worshipper’s aspiration with greater plenitude and onward force.

The deity: Indra

Frequently Asked Questions

It is an invitation hymn to Indra to come to the sacrifice, sit on the strewn barhis, and drink the well-pressed Soma. The praise focuses on Indra’s power to destroy obstructions (Vṛtras) and to grant strength and victory.

Soma is the offering that delights and energizes Indra. The hymn links Soma’s exhilaration with Indra’s ability to act decisively—especially to break what blocks progress and to release life-giving flow.

Vṛtra refers to forces that ‘constrict’—anything that blocks the free flow of light, strength, or prosperity. Indra’s Vṛtra-slaying symbolizes removing those blockages so movement and growth can return.
