Bhīṣma

Concept: Purāṇic accounts often present multiple origin-narratives; the seeker should ask how they harmonize rather than reject one.

Application: When teachings seem contradictory, adopt Bhīṣma’s posture: respectful questioning, patience, and synthesis.

FAQs

Purāṇic literature often preserves multiple traditional accounts. One presents Lakṣmī’s cosmic manifestation from the Ocean of Milk, while another places her within a genealogical (lineage) framework as born through Khyāti in Bhṛgu’s family.

It highlights creation-era mythic history and reconciles cosmological emergence with familial genealogy—typical of the Sṛṣṭikhaṇḍa’s encyclopedic style.

It models careful inquiry: when sacred traditions appear to differ, one should seek a coherent understanding through respectful questioning of an authoritative teacher.
