Somavaṃśa (Lunar Dynasty)

FAQs

Bhīṣma asks for an account of the origin of the Somavaṃśa (Lunar Dynasty) and a listing of the renowned kings who appeared in that lineage.

The verse addresses a viśārada (“expert/learned narrator”). In Padma Purāṇa dialogue settings, this is the responding sage/narrator in the Bhīṣma-centered discourse (often framed through a sage explaining to Bhīṣma).

It reflects the Purāṇic ideal of kingship where righteous rule, lineage memory, and virtuous deeds are preserved through kīrti (fame/glory) as a marker of dharmic conduct.
