Adhyaya 71 — The King’s Remorse and the Sage’s Counsel on the Necessity of a Wife
तद्गच्छ त्वं स्वधर्मेण परिपालय मेदिनीम् ।
पत्नी सहायः सर्वाश्च कुरु धर्मवतीः क्रियाः ॥
tad gaccha tvaṃ svadharmeṇa paripālaya medinīm | patnīsahāyaḥ sarvāś ca kuru dharmavatīḥ kriyāḥ ||
Vì thế, hãy đi và theo đúng bổn phận của mình mà bảo hộ cõi đất. Lấy hiền thê làm trợ duyên, hãy thực hành mọi nghi lễ và mọi việc làm một cách hợp với dharma (chánh pháp).
Kingship is framed as a dharmic stewardship: protection of the realm and performance of righteous conduct. The explicit mention of the wife as ‘sahāya’ reflects the Purāṇic ideal that household and royal duties are sustained through lawful partnership.
Anucarita within Manvantara: exemplary conduct and instruction embedded in a Manvantara-era story, illustrating dharma in practice.
‘Earth’ (medinī) can signify the embodied field of action; ruling it ‘by svadharma’ indicates mastery of one’s role without envy of another’s path. The wife-as-helper can symbolize śakti supporting dharmic action, though no explicit Devī-form is invoked here.
