Adhyaya 22 — Kuvalayashva’s Death through Daitya-Deceit and Madalasa’s Self-Immolation
मच्छ्रु श्रुपुर्मद्वचनाद्द्विजरक्षणतत्परः ।
प्राप्तो मे यः सुतो मृत्युं कथं शोच्यः स धीमताम् ॥
macchru śrupur madvacanād dvijarakṣaṇatatparaḥ /
prāpto me yaḥ suto mṛtyuṃ kathaṃ śocyaḥ sa dhīmatām
“Vâng lời ta, hết lòng bảo hộ những bậc ‘hai lần sinh’ (brāhmaṇa), con trai ta đã gặp cái chết. Bậc trí làm sao có thể than khóc cho nó?”

The king frames death in service of dharma as auspicious rather than tragic. Protecting the learned/ritual order is presented as a core royal duty, and sacrifice for it earns honor.
Ethical-political instruction embedded in lineage narrative (vaṃśānucarita-type).
‘Dvija’ can also be read symbolically as the ‘twice-born’ awareness (higher discernment). Protecting dvija thus hints at safeguarding sacred knowledge and inner awakening against forces of adharma.
