Shloka 109

युधिष्ठिर बोले--तात यक्ष! सुनो न तो कुल ब्राह्मणत्वमें कारण है न स्वाध्याय और न शास्त्रश्रवण। ब्राह्मणत्वका हेतु आचार ही है, इसमें संशय नहीं है ।।

yudhiṣṭhira uvāca—tāta yakṣa! śṛṇu: na tu kulaṃ brāhmaṇatve kāraṇaṃ, na svādhyāyaḥ, na śāstraśravaṇam. brāhmaṇatvasya hetur ācāra eva; atra na saṃśayaḥ. vṛttaṃ yatnena saṃrakṣyaṃ brāhmaṇena viśeṣataḥ. akṣīṇavṛtto na kṣīṇaḥ; vṛttatas tu hato hataḥ.

Yudhiṣṭhira nói: “Này Yakṣa đáng kính, hãy nghe. Không phải do sinh trong dòng họ, cũng không phải do tự học, lại càng không phải chỉ do nghe kinh điển mà thành Bà-la-môn. Nền tảng chân thật của Bà-la-môn tính chỉ là hạnh kiểm—điều ấy không nghi ngờ. Vì vậy phải gắng sức gìn giữ nếp sống ngay thẳng; và một Bà-la-môn lại càng phải đặc biệt canh giữ điều đó. Bởi người còn nguyên vẹn hạnh kiểm thì không suy giảm; còn kẻ hư hoại về hạnh kiểm thì hư hoại hoàn toàn.”
