आदि-अन्तसे रहित भगवान्‌ अच्युतने उन दोनों बूँदोंकी ओर देखा। उनमेंसे एक बूँद भगवानकी दृष्टि पड़ते ही उनकी प्रेरणासे तमोमय मधुनामक दैत्यके आकारमें परिणत हो गयी। उस दैत्यका रंग मधुके समान था और उसकी कान्ति बड़ी सुन्दर थी। जलकी दूसरी बूँद

vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | tāv abhyadhāvatāṃ śreṣṭhī tamasā rajasānvitau | balavantau gadāhastau padmanālānusāriṇau ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana nói: Được thúc đẩy bởi tamas và rajas, hai ác ma hàng đầu—Madhu và Kaiṭabha—lao vút về phía trước. Chúng sức mạnh phi thường, tay cầm chùy, tiến dọc theo cuống sen, bị những lực tối tăm và cuồng nhiệt đã tạo nên hình hài chúng thúc đẩy. Đoạn này gợi rằng khi các guṇa không được điều ngự mà bị khuấy động, chúng có thể hiện thành chướng ngại bạo liệt đối với trật tự vũ trụ, khiến thần lực phải chế ngự và phục hồi thế quân bình.
