Bhrigu–Bharadvaja Dialogue: A Karma-Based Account of Varṇa

Bhīṣma urges equanimity: since joy and sorrow, pleasure and pain naturally arise within a person, one should not be carried away by grief; lamentation is unproductive compared to steady discernment and self-control.
In the Śānti Parva’s instruction to the grieving king, Bhīṣma continues his counsel by reframing emotional turmoil as a universal inner condition—opposites coexist—thereby discouraging excessive mourning and guiding the listener toward composure and dharmic reflection.
