एते5भवन्नर्जुनतः क्षुद्रसर्पाश्न॒ कर्णत: । महाराज! मुनि
sañjaya uvāca |
ete ’bhavann arjunataḥ kṣudra-sarpāś ca karṇataḥ ||
Sañjaya thưa: Khi ấy, những loài rắn nhỏ đã ngả về phía Arjuna, còn những loài khác lại đứng về phía Karṇa. Thế là ngay giữa hàng nāga cũng hình thành bè phái—kẻ ủng hộ Arjuna, người theo Karṇa—phản chiếu lẽ thường của chiến tranh: liên minh đổi thay theo sức mạnh người ta tưởng thấy, theo định mệnh và những mối ràng buộc từ trước, chứ không theo một ý niệm trung thành bất biến nào.
