नाश्रौष॑ नामगोत्राणि कीर्तन च परस्परम् | कानोंका परदा फाड़नेवाले डंकेकी आवाजसे सारी रणभूमि गूँज उठी थी। अतः वहाँ अपने पुरुषार्थको प्रकट करनेवाले किसी योद्धाकी बात मुझे नहीं सुनायी देती थी। वे लोग जो आपसमें नाम-गोत्र आदिका परिचय देते थे, उसे भी मैं नहीं सुन पाता था

Sañjaya thưa: Ta không thể nghe rõ những tiếng xướng danh và dòng tộc, cũng không nghe được những lời hô đáp qua lại giữa các chiến binh. Chiến địa vang dội tiếng trống trận và tiếng ồn ào cuồn cuộn, đến nỗi ngay cả những lời thách đấu tự xưng để phô bày dũng khí cũng mờ nhạt đối với ta; và những lời giới thiệu tên họ, tộc hệ mà người ta trao đổi với nhau, ta cũng không sao phân biệt được.
