Merit and Destinations from the Gift of Cows
क्रोधो हन्ति हि यद् दानं तस्माद् दानातू परं दम: । अदृश्यानि महाराज स्थानान्ययुतशो दिवि
bhīṣma uvāca | krodho hanti hi yad dānaṃ tasmād dānāt paraṃ damaḥ | adṛśyāni mahārāja sthānāny ayutaśo divi | kāmayānā mahats thānaṃ tasmād dānāt paraṃ damaḥ ||
Bhishma nói: Cơn giận phá hủy mọi công đức mà một món quà có thể đem lại; vì thế, tự chế (năng lực kìm giữ sân hận và các căn) được xem là cao hơn bố thí. Hỡi đại vương, trên cõi trời có vô số chốn ở vô hình; các bậc hiền triết và chư thiên khát cầu địa vị tối thượng rời khỏi thế gian này để đến những cảnh giới ấy nhờ thực hành tự chế. Bởi vậy, tự chế vượt hơn bố thí.
