Educational Q&A

Food should be accepted only when it is obtained and approached with dharmic fitness and restraint; if it has been first consumed/handled by unauthorized, armed, or wicked persons, it is considered spiritually impure—symbolically assigned to rākṣasas—and should be avoided.

In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma instructs Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. Here he gives a rule about the propriety of eating: certain prior contact with food (by unfit/unauthorized, armed, or immoral persons) renders it unfit for a righteous person.
