The verse highlights gṛhastha-dharma: receiving and sustaining a guest—especially a potent ascetic—requires patience, self-control, and unwavering hospitality. A householder’s ethical strength is measured not only by ritual but by steady conduct under prolonged pressure.
Vāyudeva states that the powerful sage Durvāsā, taking on the appearance of a brāhmaṇa, lived for a long time in the speaker’s house at Dvāravatī, setting the stage for a sustained test of the host’s duties and restraint.
