Umā’s Inquiry and the Manifestation of the Third Eye (उमा–प्रश्नः तृतीयनेत्रोत्पत्तिः)
न त्वमल्पेन तपसा दानेन नियमेन वा । इमं लोकमनुप्राप्ता त्वं हि तत्त्व वदस्व मे
na tvam alpena tapasā dānena niyamena vā | imaṁ lokam anuprāptā tvaṁ hi tattvaṁ vadasva me ||
Bhīṣma nói: “Hẳn không phải nhờ chút khổ hạnh ít ỏi, cũng không chỉ nhờ bố thí hay những sự kiêng giữ bề ngoài, mà nàng đạt đến cảnh giới và cõi này. Vậy hãy nói cho ta chân lý—hãy nói sự thật đúng như nó là.”
भीष्म उवाच
Bhīṣma implies that genuine spiritual attainment is not produced by a token amount of austerity, charity, or mere external observances. He urges disclosure of tattva—inner truth or the essential principle—suggesting that real dharma is grounded in realized understanding, not only in outward acts.
Bhīṣma addresses a (female) interlocutor who has ‘reached this world/state’ (anuprāptā). He infers that such attainment must rest on substantial merit or realization, and therefore requests that she explain the underlying truth to him.
