Samantapañcaka Narrative and the Measure of an Akṣauhiṇī

Educational Q&A

The passage frames a moral-spiritual pattern: sincere approach (abhigamana) and disciplined effort are followed by a divine test. The divine may confront the aspirant as an opponent, refining courage, humility, and steadfastness before bestowing favor.

It announces the order of episodes: first the ‘Arjuna’s Approach’ section, then the ‘Kirāta’ section, where Śiva—disguised as a hunter (Kirāta)—engages Arjuna in combat, a famed encounter leading to recognition of the divine and the granting of boons.
